value of these coins has caused a depreciation in the value of British subsidiary coins and isseriously affecting the trade of the Colony as well as that of Canton.

The Menorials of the Finance Commission and the Board of Revenue which were issued last year clearly showed an appreciation of the principle that coinage must be regulated accord ing to current requirements, and that rints must not be permitted to issue coin in exaggerated quantities.

I therefore have the honour to request that the complaint of the Governor of Hongkong may be communicated without delay to the Provincial Authorities, and that they may be called upon to desist from issuing a larger quantity of subsidiary coins than is necessary for current requirements.

1 would also be glad to know if it is with the

approval of the Eoard of Revenue that minted dollars are being con- verted into subsidiary coins and whether the operations of the

Canton Mint fall generally under the control of that Board.
